Japanese Antique Bamboo Flower Basket (Hanakago) — Vase-Form with Four Feet and Loop Handles

A characterful antique Japanese bamboo flower basket (hanakago — 花籠) of striking sculptural presence, woven in a generous vase-form with a wide, bulging body that tapers to a narrow waist before flaring outward again at the broad circular mouth.

The basket stands on four sturdy cylindrical bamboo feet, which lift the body from the surface and lend the piece a grounded, stable dignity.

At the shoulder, two small loop handles (mimi) are formed from twisted bamboo splints — a refined decorative accent that echoes the handle forms of classical Japanese ceramic flower vases and bronze vessels, reinforcing the basket's role as a vessel for floral arrangement (ikebana) or decorative display.

The body is woven in a dense, closely worked plain-twill (hira-ami) technique using flat bamboo splints, creating a tight and even surface.

The structural framework of upright bamboo ribs runs vertically at regular intervals around the body, adding rhythm and formal definition to the form.

The base is reinforced with a woven panel supported by the four feet and a framework of structural bamboo rods.

The entire basket has developed a deep, rich blackish-brown patina through long years of use and age — the bamboo splints alternating between near-black and warm reddish-brown tones where the original surface finish remains, creating a surface of subtle, restrained beauty.

This piece is offered without original box or attribution.

It would be equally at home as a display object, an ikebana arrangement vessel with a water container inserted, or as a collector's piece of antique Japanese folk craft.
