This exceptional double-mouthed ikebana vase is a rare and sculptural work of Shigaraki ware, one of Japan's six ancient kilns with a heritage spanning over a thousand years. The vase features a boldly shaped body with two separate openings at the top — an unusual and highly collectible form that makes this piece both a functional flower vessel and a standalone sculptural object.
The surface is covered in a rich, multi-layered glaze in deep earthy browns and muted olive greens, characteristic of Shigaraki's celebrated firing traditions. Sweeping across the body is a distinctive gold (kinsai) brushwork decoration — lustrous gold pigment applied in broad, flowing strokes that catch the light and add a sense of luxurious depth to the rustic surface. One side of the body is further adorned with white slip resist floral motifs — delicate botanical silhouettes set against a warm background — creating a beautiful tension between the rough, organic glaze and the refined decorative imagery.
The unglazed foot ring reveals the warm pinkish-red clay body typical of authentic Shigaraki ware. This is a genuine, one-of-a-kind piece that embodies the wabi-sabi aesthetic beloved by collectors of Japanese ceramics worldwide.
