Ito Kosho(1932–2024)

Artist Profile
Ito Kosho (1932–2024) was born in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, and is celebrated as a pioneer of ceramic sculpture in Japan. After apprenticing at a Kutani ware kiln in his teens, he pursued an entirely original path, establishing his atelier in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture in 1972. His work — rooted in the expressive and unpredictable properties of clay, including freezing, cracking, and organic deformation — bridges ceramics, sculpture, and installation art. Representing Japan at major international exhibitions, he received a Gold Medal at an international triennale (1978) and held solo exhibitions at prestigious museums worldwide. He received a major retrospective at a leading contemporary art museum in Tokyo (2009) and was an Honorary Guest Professor at Kanazawa College of Art and Design.
