Description
A finely preserved ancient cast bronze anthropomorphic head of highly stylized form, rendered with pronounced circular eyes, an elongated projecting nose, and incised horizontal mouth lines. The face is surmounted by a pointed cranial form or headdress, giving the piece a striking mask-like appearance.
The reverse remains largely plain and uneven, with ancient casting irregularities and age-related corrosion cavity, indicating the object was intended for frontal display or attachment. The lower section terminates in a broken projection, likely the remnant of an attachment tang, suggesting the head originally served as a pendant, votive applique, or small cultic fitting.
The object bears an attractive dark olive to brown patina with lighter mineral encrustation, consistent with considerable antiquity.
Cultural Attribution
The stylized physiognomy and abstracted geometric treatment are consistent with small bronze devotional and ornamental objects produced in the Southern Levant during the transitional Late Bronze to Early Iron Age, within the broader Canaanite / early Israelite / Phoenician cultural sphere.
Comparable examples are known from regional cult sites and settlement contexts where miniature anthropomorphic bronzes functioned as:
Protective amulets
Personal devotional objects
Shrine votives
Decorative attachments for furniture, harness, or ritual equipment
Measurements
Length: 29.2 mm
Width: 16 mm
Depth: 10.9 mm
Weight: 8.28 grams
Condition
Excellent ancient condition for type.
Strong intact facial features
Attractive stable archaeological patina
Surface wear and mineral accretions commensurate with age
Reverse corrosion cavity
Lower attachment point anciently broken
Provenance
Private European collection formed in the 1980s.
Acquired on the European antiquities market.
A declaration of lawful origin and a provenance statement can be provided in PDF format upon request.
Final note :
This compelling miniature bronze head embodies the expressive abstraction characteristic of early Levantine metalwork. The exaggerated eyes and prominent nose likely carried symbolic or apotropaic significance, while the small scale suggests personal ownership or intimate ritual use. Objects of this type remain highly sought after for their visual power and rarity.
