ABOUT THE ARTIST
Martín Chirino (1925–2019)
was a Spanish sculptor and a leading figure in modern abstract sculpture. Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, he developed a distinctive artistic language centered on the use of iron, creating dynamic spiral and wind-inspired forms. His work reflects a deep connection to nature, particularly the landscapes and traditions of the Canary Islands.
Chirino was a founding member of the El Paso group in 1957, which played a crucial role in renewing Spanish avant-garde art. His sculptures, often monumental in scale, combine strength and elegance, exploring movement and space.
Among his major achievements are the National Prize for Plastic Arts, his international exhibitions, and his role as director of the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, consolidating his legacy in contemporary sculpture.
