Artwork Description
Artist: Young-Cha Kim (South Korean, b. 1949)
Title: Untitled (from the "Vivid Life" series)
Date: 1986
Medium: Original painting on paper (Watercolor/Mixed Media)
Dimensions: 38.7 x 52.4 cm
Signature: Signed and dated "Young-cha KIM 86" in pencil, lower right.
Artist Biography & Style
Young-Cha Kim (also referenced as Kim Yong-Chul) is a prominent figure in South Korean contemporary art. After earning her B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Hongik University, she became known for her ability to bridge traditional Korean pictorial elements with Western abstract expressionism. Her works are held in prestigious permanent collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Korea, and the Seoul Museum of Art.
Historical Significance of the Work
This original work was created during a pivotal "re-emergence" period in Kim’s career. By 1986, the artist had transitioned away from the socio-political critiques of the 1970s toward a style defined by "vivid, fresh life."
This era is characterized by:
Symbolic Optimism: The use of vibrant colors and motifs like hearts, flowers, and birds to represent a hopeful future.
Dynamic Brushwork: Energetic, fluid strokes that blur the lines between figuration and abstraction.
Originality: As a unique work on paper (rather than a numbered lithograph), this piece represents a direct and unmultiplied expression of the artist's hand during her most celebrated creative shift.
Condition & Format
The work is executed on a substantial paper format (38.7 x 52.4 cm). The clear, handwritten signature and date in the lower backside provide critical provenance and verify its creation during this sought-after mid-1980s period.

Gallery book is included with sale and will be boxed and shipped with original painting.
