14th/15th century ceramic gourd vase
Beige ceramic gourd-shaped vase or large bulb, also called "frog gourd".
Gourd-shaped vase with handles and a bulging pointed face, resting on a flat base.
Strange gourd or large bulb resting flat on a circular foot.
The vase bears a label "fouilles de la rue Dante 1901".
This ceramic comes from excavations carried out on rue Dante by archaeologist Charles Magne in Paris in 1901.
This type of ceramic gourd has been present since the Middle Ages; its shape is thought to be the survivng form of an earlier wooden version.
Its nickname frog comes from the fact that the peasant buried it in summer when working in the field to protect it from the sun and benefit from the cool of the ground. Its flattened shape resembles a buried frog.
They were produced from the mid-14th century in the north of France.
Renaissance period, 14th/15th century CE
Length 12.4 cm - width 11.6 cm - Perfect condition - no restoration
