賣家描述
Bocio Fetish Figure – Fon – Benin – Wood & Cowrie Shells – Early/Mid-20th century
Details
Origin: Fon people
Country: Benin
Materials: Wood, cowrie shells
Dimensions: H 69 cm with stand
Weight: approx. 8 kg with stand
Period: Early/mid-20th century
Provenance: Ex European private collection
Description
Striking Fon bocio figure carved in a powerful and highly reduced form, with a cylindrical body, prominent neck, and compact head. The eyes, inlaid with cowrie shells, give the figure an intense and watchful presence, while the simplified anatomy reinforces its sculptural authority.
Among the Fon, bocio figures were conceived as active protective objects, created to contain, repel, or redirect harmful forces. This example is particularly appealing for its calm strength, its austere geometry, and the quiet intensity of its expression. The surface shows age-consistent wear and a deep, honest patina that further enhances its presence. Particularly substantial for its size, it weighs approximately 8 kg with its custom wooden stand.
Mounted on a custom wooden stand for display.
Condition
Wear, abrasions, and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. Good overall condition, with strong presence. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The figure and its custom wooden stand.
