Description (English)

This facial mask is a striking expression of the aesthetics of the Dan people of the Ivory Coast. The work is distinguished by a powerful spiritual presence, enhanced by a smooth patina that bears witness to its long ritual life. The features, of great formal purity, are giving the mask an expression that is both peaceful and protective. The balance of volumes, between the bulging forehead and the tapered chin, perfectly illustrates the mastery of Dan carvers in creating objects that mediate between the spirit world and the world of men.
