昇雲 Shooun — Bronze Vase with Twin 孔雀 Peacock Relief, Takaoka Copperware
A commanding bronze vase (hanaire) bearing a finely cast relief of two peacocks, produced within the Takaoka copperware (Takaoka Doki) tradition of Toyama Prefecture — Japan's foremost center of bronze casting, holding over 90% of national production and designated a Traditional Craft by the national government since 1975.
The twin peacocks are rendered in meticulous detail across the shoulder of the vessel: feathers, crests, and tail plumage articulated with the precision that Takaoka craftsmen have refined over 400 years. The peacock — a symbol of beauty, nobility, and good fortune in East Asian iconography — is among the most demanding subjects in relief casting, requiring mastery of both the original modeling and the casting process to preserve fine detail in metal. The surface carries a rich, layered patina in warm bronze tones, achieved through Takaoka's signature chemical oxidation techniques. The substantial weight of the piece conveys the density and permanence of solid bronze casting. Comes in an original signed paulownia wood box (tomobako) with the artist's handwritten inscription and personal seal — fully authenticated.
