Majiayao Culture Painted Pottery Double-Handled Jar
Description:
This is a Neolithic Majiayao Culture painted pottery jar with two handles. Made of red clay, its texture is loose and rustic, with a warm, orange-red hue throughout. It is a typical remnant of the prehistoric painted pottery civilization in the Yellow River basin.
The shape features a flared mouth, constricted neck, sloping shoulders, a bulging belly, a constricted lower belly, and a flat bottom. Symmetrical bridge-shaped handles are located on both sides of the shoulders and belly, facilitating carrying with ropes, thus serving both practical and ritual functions. The overall shape is full and stable, with lines flowing gracefully from the rim to the bottom, exhibiting considerable tension.
The decoration is painted in black. The neck is adorned with simple string patterns, while the main decoration on the shoulders and belly is a continuous geometric pattern of zigzag lines. The lines are bold and archaic, with free and unrestrained brushstrokes. The interlacing patterns create a dynamic visual effect, perhaps symbolizing the ancient people's simple observation of nature, mountains, rivers, and water. The painted decorations on the vessel, though showing signs of wear and tear over thousands of years, have only added to its antique charm. The strong contrast between the red pottery background and the black painted decorations showcases the simplicity and power of primitive art.
The exposed clay at the bottom reveals the texture of the clay left by the hand-made pottery, giving it a rustic and natural feel. This piece perfectly preserves the production techniques and aesthetic characteristics of prehistoric painted pottery, providing valuable material evidence for the study of Neolithic culture in the upper reaches of the Yellow River.
