A Nayarit Terracotta Seated Figure, Western Mexico, 2nd to 6th Century A.D.

Fine ly hand-modelled terracotta figure depicting a seated personage with an elaborate crested headdress, expressive facial features, large earspools, and dynamic posture. The figure holds an object or smaller figure in its arms and retains significant traces of original red pigment, especially on the headdress and body. Although restored in antiquity or modern times, the piece remains structurally stable and stands well by itself, displaying the characteristic expressive style and robust modelling of Nayarit ceramic sculpture.

Figures of this type are iconic of the Preclassic to Early Classic traditions of Western Mexico and were typically placed in shaft tombs as funerary offerings.
