This striking Japanese bamboo flower basket (Hanakago) features a bold spherical body woven in an intricate diagonal lattice pattern (Kagome-ami variant), finished in a dramatic two-tone lacquer of deep black and vivid crimson red. The contrasting colors accentuate the precise geometry of the open weave, giving the piece a powerful visual rhythm. A single curved handle rises elegantly from the body, its strand twisted with the same black-and-red lacquered bamboo, adding a sculptural accent to the silhouette.

The rounded belly of the basket — reminiscent of the classic tsubo (jar) form — is a hallmark of refined Japanese basket-making traditions, where the ikebana flower arrangement is placed in a glass or metal liner (otoshi) set inside. This basket is suitable for use as a chabana (tea ceremony flower vase) or as a standalone decorative object of considerable artistic merit.
