賣家描述
Ancient Roman Bronze Zoomorphic Pendant - Animal Amuletic Pendant – 1st–3rd Century AD
An authentic Ancient Roman bronze zoomorphic pendant depicting a stylized quadruped animal, most likely a ram or goat, rendered in a compact sculptural form.
The animal is shown standing with a pronounced triangular head, short tail, and rounded body supported by four simplified legs. A circular perforation at the top of the back allowed the piece to be suspended from a cord, chain, or leather strap.
The pendant exhibits a dark green archaeological patina with areas of mineral encrustation, consistent with long burial.
Dimensions:
20.2 × 15.4 × 4.8 mm
Weight: 4.05 g
Interpretation & Symbolism:
The stylized animal likely represents a ram or goat, animals that carried significant symbolic meaning in Roman culture.
Ram symbolism
Associated with Mars, the Roman god of war
Symbol of strength, virility, and courage
Frequently used in military iconography and protective amulets
Goat symbolism
Linked to Faunus/Pan, pastoral deities of nature
Symbol of fertility and vitality
Zoomorphic pendants like this example were worn as protective amulets, believed to confer the attributes of the depicted animal upon the wearer.
Possible Military Connection:
Small bronze animal pendants are sometimes recovered from Roman military contexts, where they were worn by soldiers as personal talismans.
In Roman belief systems, amulets served to provide:
Protection in battle
Strength and courage
Divine favor
The ram’s association with Mars, patron god of Roman soldiers, makes such pendants particularly appropriate as personal military charms.
While not exclusively military objects, similar pendants have been discovered in Roman forts and frontier settlements, suggesting they were popular among soldiers and civilians alike.
Condition: Top condition and authentic natural patina
Excellent preservation of the zoomorphic form
Attractive dark green patina
Minor surface wear consistent with age and burial
Original perforation intact
The natural patina confirms the object's authenticity and long antiquity.
Provenance:
Ex-private European collection, established in the 1980s.
