Rare late Roman to early Byzantine rock crystal cosmetic (kohl) jar. The jar is finely carved with gently sloping walls, a flat base and a neatly finished rim. The vessel is hollowed from a single piece of translucent crystal, displaying a soft milky clarity with natural inclusions and subtle internal veiling.

-> Such containers were used in antiquity to store kohl and other cosmetic substances, valued not only for their practical function but also for the prestige of the material. Rock crystal objects were luxury items, associated with refinement and elite personal care.

Condition: good solid condition. Minor abrasions and natural inclusions visible throughout. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.

-> Rock crystal, a transparent and colourless quartz, was believed by the ancients to be formed from ice which had hardened into stone through intense freezing. Pliny the Elder reports that it was. found in many places, but the best was brought from India.
