Antique Japanese Kogai - Iron, Dragon in Clouds Relief, Edo Period Sword Fitting
Imagine a samurai preparing for the day. Before fastening his sword, he reaches for this kogai — not a weapon, but an intimate daily tool, worn close to the body, used to tend his hair and maintain his dignity.
This is that object.
Forged in iron and blackened with age, this kogai dates to the Edo period — an era of peace, refinement, and extraordinary craftsmanship. On its face, a dragon rises through swirling clouds, rendered in high relief with remarkable detail: scaled body twisting with energy, claws reaching, mane flowing. The nanako ground beneath gives depth and texture to the composition.
The reverse is plain and smooth — the side that rested against the scabbard, hidden from the world, known only to its owner.
It has survived intact for over 150 years. No cracks. No repairs. The patina is deep and even — the natural result of time, touch, and careful preservation.
A single object. A single owner at a time. Passed down through generations until it reached us.
This is a fine antique Japanese kogai (笄), a decorative hair-dressing implement that was worn as part of a Japanese sword mounting (koshirae). It dates to the Edo period (1603–1868).
Design & Craftsmanship
The front face features a beautifully executed high-relief carving of a dragon among swirling clouds (unryū-zu / 雲龍図). The dragon is rendered with great detail — scaled body, flowing mane, and dynamic movement — set against a finely textured nanako (fish-roe) ground. The reverse is plain and flat, as is typical for kogai.
Condition
Overall condition is good for its age. The iron shows a deep, even black patina consistent with age and use. Minor surface wear is present but does not detract from the piece. No cracks or major damage observed.
