Richard Smeets (Gennep, 1955) is a Dutch visual artist known for his lyrical semi-abstract paintings and sculptures. He studied at the Academie Beeldende Kunsten Maastricht from 1973 to 1978 and has developed into an internationally recognized artist.
Smeets' work is thematically structured in three periods. In the first period, women are the central focus. The second period is inspired by his travels to Malaysia and Indonesia, his mother's country of origin. In the third period, he focuses on the Dutch landscape.
His paintings are characterized by a layered working method, in which he transforms impressions into memories, then into dreams, and finally into images. He works from his studio in Heijen, and his works are exhibited nationally and internationally, including in the Netherlands, Germany, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United States.
