■ Description
This is a Hagi ware tea bowl by Sueji Kansetsu of Shogetsuan.
Hagi ware is a traditional Japanese ceramic from Yamaguchi Prefecture, known for its soft clay texture, warm glaze tones, and the unique characteristic of changing appearance over time, often referred to as the “Seven Transformations of Hagi.” This piece also displays a gentle milky-white glaze combined with natural earthy tones, creating a calm and refined wabi-sabi aesthetic.
The form is well-balanced with a slightly rounded shape, offering both practicality and visual appeal for tea ceremony use. Inside the bowl, you can observe subtle glaze pooling and fine crackles (crazing), which will develop further character with continued use.
The foot (kodai) features a strong and expressive form, including intentional cut marks that are part of the original design. These are not chips or damage, but rather an important characteristic of the piece.
A signature can be found near the foot, and the accompanying wooden box (tomobako) confirms the work of “Sueji Kansetsu.”
