Item Description:
Vermilion Lacquer Tea Caddy with Old Pine Maki-e Design
This striking natsume (tea caddy) is a bold and celebratory work by the lacquer artist Shōhō, whose signature and red seal appear on the original wooden storage box.
The piece is titled "Rōshō" (老松), meaning "Ancient Pine" — one of the most auspicious motifs in Japanese art, symbolising longevity, strength, and endurance.
The entire exterior is finished in a vivid vermilion lacquer (shu-nuri), creating a brilliantly warm and eye-catching ground.
Over this, an aged pine tree of immense character is rendered in fine black maki-e across the entire surface — lid and body alike — in a seamless panoramic composition.
The gnarled, heavily textured trunk is depicted with extraordinary detail using intricate dotting and hatching techniques, while the radiating pine needle clusters are rendered with remarkable precision and vitality.
The design wraps continuously around the vessel, giving the impression of standing beneath the canopy of a great, ancient pine.
The interior is finished in lustrous black lacquer, and the base of both body and lid are lacquered in black.
The piece is accompanied by its original tomobako (signed wooden storage box), inscribed with "老松 朱塗 中棗" and bearing the artist's signature "尚峰" (Shōhō) with red seal.
This is a visually powerful tea caddy that embodies the Japanese spirit of kotobuki (longevity and celebration), making it an ideal choice for auspicious occasions and New Year tea ceremonies.
Size
Height: 7.5 cm
Width: 7 cm
Depth: 7 cm
Weight: 77 g
Condition
The vermilion lacquer surface retains its vivid gloss overall, with minor light scratches and scuffing consistent with age and storage; the wooden tomobako shows some age-related staining and light wear.
Artist Profile
Shōhō (尚峰) is a Japanese lacquer artist (nushi) working in the traditional tea ceremony utensil genre, signing works with the name "尚峰" accompanied by a red seal on the tomobako. This piece demonstrates accomplished shu-nuri (vermilion lacquer) technique combined with exceptionally detailed black maki-e pine decoration. Detailed biographical records are limited in public sources, as many traditional lacquer artists of this calibre work primarily through tea ceremony specialist channels.
