Ash Glaze with Iron Brushwork Flower Vase (Tokkuri-form), Japan
A compact and beautifully formed flower vase in the tokkuri (sake bottle) style, this piece embodies the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi — finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity.
Covered in a soft ash glaze (hai-yu) with bold iron brushwork (tetsu-bun) sweeping across the rounded body, the glaze surface displays a striking ice-crackle crazing (hyōretsu-kanyū), creating an intricate web of fine lines across the pale grey-green ground. The dynamic brushwork, rendered in iron oxide, contrasts elegantly with the muted glaze tone, evoking the free spirit of ancient Karatsu-style ceramics.
The narrow, flared lip and squat, swelling body give the piece a quiet, dignified presence — perfectly suited to a single stem in a tokonoma alcove or tea room setting.
Size
Height: 13 cm
Width: approx. 9 cm
Weight: 379 g (vase only) / 665 g (including tomobako)
Include
Comes with original wooden storage box (tomobako) bearing the title inscription Hai-yu Tetsu-bun Tokkuri (Ash Glaze Iron Brushwork Tokkuri) and the artist's personal signature and seal.
Condition
In excellent overall condition with no chips or cracks; the ice-crackle crazing is an intentional and characteristic feature of the glaze, not damage.
