The Berlage Chair / Designer: Richard Hutten / Year Made: 2004

The Berlage chair by Richard Hutten for Gispen is a dining room chair based on the armchair by architect and urban planner Hendrik Petrus Berlage. Hendrik Petrus Berlage designed the original armchair for the Van Hengel family. The seat had no straight legs. The backrest continued in line with the legs. In Homage, Richard Hutten designed a contemporary dining chair for the Grand Café of the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, in which Berlage's influences and his own are clearly visible. Hendrik Petrus Berlage was the architect who designed the Gemeentemuseum, and the museum also holds the biggest collection of his work, including most of his furniture. He is more widely known for the Beurs van Berlage in Amsterdam.

The Berlage Chair was designed by Richard Hutten for the Grand Café of the Gemeentemuseum The Hague.

This was the starting point for its design by Richard. He took the chair Berlage has designed for a Dutch family and translated it into the 20th century. Before commencing work on the Berlage Chair, Hutten searched the museum's entire Berlage collection for a model suitable to serve as a starting point for his design. Berlage’s chair for the Van Hengel family emerged as the best choice: not a chair with vertical legs, but one in which the line of the back extends through into the back legs. Hutten was struck by this element and impressed by the clarity of structure demonstrated by the entire design.

While studying the original chair in the depot of the museum, he found out the upholstery of the chair was very randomly connected to the bottom of the chair. This randomness he used in the seat of his own chair. For the chair's upholstery, Hutten drew his inspiration from the webbing used to attach the upholstery to the underside of the seat in the original design. He focused on the apparently random way in which the webbing is attached to the frame and exaggerated this in his own design. The Berlage itself chair is covered with webbing, which are straps that are secured to the underside of the chair. So all the ingredients of Hutten's Berlage Chair are derived from the original.

The frame is made of light oak.
