賣家描述
exceptional Edo Period Japanese Raden & Maki-e Suzuribako (Writing Box) with Monkeys in Bamboo Grove.
A refined Japanese Edo-period suzuribako (writing box), exquisitely decorated with raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) and maki-e lacquer techniques. The cover depicts lively monkeys playing among bamboo groves, rendered with finely cut shell inlays that shimmer beautifully in iridescent hues under changing light. The colors, under light, display a dreamlike iridescence of interwoven shades of green, purple, pink, and silver, exuding a strong sense of classical Eastern beauty. The monkeys are depicted with lifelike expressions and varied postures, frolicking and climbing among the bamboo, conveying a refined scholar\'s taste and auspicious symbolism.
The interior is richly finished in dense nashiji gold lacquer, adorned with elegant grapevine motifs, retaining its original inkstone, suiteki water dropper, and writing implements tray. The bronze suiteki displays an attractive aged patina, enhancing the box’s historical character.
Monkey-and-bamboo imagery was a favored literati theme during the Edo period, symbolizing intelligence, vitality, and scholarly elegance. The extraordinarily delicate raden work and refined lacquer surface reflect the high craftsmanship of traditional Japanese atelier production. the mother-of-pearl inlay pieces are finely cut, and the bamboo leaves and monkey hair are depicted with extreme intricacy, representing a high level of fine craftsmanship typical of the early handcrafted era.
