Item Description
林亮次 Hayashi Ryoji(1940- ) Nezumi Shino Chawan (Matcha Bowl)
This exquisite chawan (tea bowl) is a masterwork of Nezumi Shino — one of the most revered and technically demanding styles within the Mino ware tradition of Gifu Prefecture, Japan. Created by celebrated ceramic artist Hayashi Ryoji at his Sozan-gama kiln in Toki City, this piece embodies the profound spirit of wabi aesthetics that defines the finest Japanese tea ceremony ceramics.
Nezumi Shino (literally "mouse-grey Shino") is distinguished by its dramatic iron-slip ground, over which creamy feldspar glaze (chōseki-yu) is applied. During the intense kiln firing, the iron beneath reacts to produce the characteristic warm terracotta and charcoal-grey tones, punctuated by fluid white glaze rivers that cascade across the surface — each utterly unique, each unrepeatable. This bowl displays precisely that interplay: a vivid iron-red body richly interspersed with pools and rivulets of milk-white glaze, soft blue-grey tones emerging where the iron slip sits exposed, and a luminous russet higake (flame flash) interior that deepens at the well.
The generous, slightly irregular form sits comfortably in the hands — its wide, rolling lip giving way to robust sides and a textured, pitted surface (yuzu-hada) alive with pin-holes and glaze crawling. The unglazed ochre foot ring reveals the natural sandy clay body characteristic of authentic Mino ware. Housed in its original fitted wooden box (tomobako), this is a work by a highly awarded master.
