Oak frame with removable Bakelite tray

A charming small Art Deco serving table or smokers table in the Dutch Hague School / Haagse Stijl taste, dating most likely from the 1920s. Compact and elegant.

The design has the sober, linear rhythm associated with Dutch modernist furniture of the period. Four slender square legs rise around the tray like a light architectural cage, with small tops just visible above the rim. The blackened feet add a sharp visual accent and anchor the whole composition.

The removable tray is made of Bakelite, the early synthetic material that was first patented in 1909. Its dark, surface has a wonderful smoky green-black tone with swirls. The raised ribbed edge makes it practical as a tray, while also giving the piece a crisp circular counterpoint to the straight oak frame.

Tables like this were often used as smokers tables, small drinks tables or occasional serving tables. Today it works beautifully as an accent piece: next to an armchair, beside a sofa, in a hallway, or as a small stand for a vase, ceramics or a lamp. It has just the right amount of period character without becoming heavy.

Good vintage condition with small signs of age and use.
