Mumia vera (often referred to as Mumia vera aegyptiaca) was a historical remedy consisting of ground-up human mummies. Historical apothecaries stored this substance in special jars or boxes labelled ‘Mumia Vera’. Medicinal use: From the Middle Ages until well into the 20th century, ground mummy was used in Europe as a panacea for all manner of ailments, ranging from stomach ache to epilepsy. Etymology: The term ‘Mumia’ is derived from the Persian word for bitumen (natural pitch), referring to the dark, tar-like substance found on embalmed bodies.
