Satsuma Ware Koro Incense Burner – Reticulated Dome Lid – Signed Gyokutozanyu Jinpu – Chrysanthemum Design – With Original Box & Cloth

Description:
A beautifully crafted Japanese Satsuma ware incense burner (koro) by the accomplished ceramic artist Jinpu of Gyokutozan (玉陶山 仁楓作), presented in its original paulownia wood storage box with original cloth.
Form & Construction
The body is of classic round form raised on three elegant curved feet, displaying the characteristic warm cream-colored ground and fine crackle glaze (kannyu) that define authentic white Satsuma ware. The proportions are refined and well-balanced.
The Reticulated Dome Lid
The most remarkable feature of this piece is its extraordinary dome-shaped reticulated lid, pierced throughout in an intricate geometric pattern of interlocking hexagons and six-pointed stars. This level of pierced openwork demands exceptional technical mastery — each opening precisely cut by hand. The inner surface of the lid reveals the natural kiln firing patina, confirming authentic age and use.
Decoration
The body is decorated with a graceful composition of chrysanthemums (kiku) rendered in gold enamel (kinzai) and polychrome overglaze, set against the warm crackle ground. The chrysanthemum is a deeply auspicious symbol in Japanese culture, associated with longevity and nobility.
Signature & Provenance
Signed on the base: 薩摩 玉陶山 仁楓 (Satsuma, Gyokutozan, Jinpu). The signature is also confirmed on the accompanying wooden storage box lid. A red seal mark is present on the original storage cloth.
Condition
Good antique condition consistent with age and use. Minor wear to gold enamel in places, as expected for a genuine period piece. No cracks or chips observed. Comes complete with original kiri wood box and original storage cloth.

Specifications:

Height: 9.8 cm
Body diameter: 8.1 cm
Mouth diameter: 3.5 cm
Material: Satsuma ware (white Satsuma / Shiro-Satsuma)
Technique: Gold enamel (kinzai), polychrome overglaze, reticulated piercing
Signed: Yes (Gyokutozan Jinpu)
Accessories: Original paulownia wood box, original storage cloth
Origin: Japan, Meiji–Taisho period
