Ancient Roman Unguentarium
/balsamarium from the Empire period.
Description :
Roman unguentarium
/balsamarium from the 1st-2nd Century AD (Empire period). Size: 16 x 6 cm
- Long, narrow neck: allowed controlled, slow pouring of oils, perfumes, or ointments.
--Spherical base: typical of small vessels intended to hold liquids.
- Part of the rim broken : It doesn't impact the beauty of the object.
This type of flask was most likely used to store perfumed oils, cosmetics, or medicinal liquids.
In the Roman period, such vessels (often called unguentaria) were used in daily grooming and hygiene, and were also commonly placed in burials as grave goods.
