Lani Man’s Nokin with Pig Tusks and Trade Beads – West Papua Highlands – Field Collected 1963
An authentic and visually striking Lani man’s nokin from the central highlands of West Papua, field collected in 1963 and preserved in an old Dutch colonial collection.
Handwoven from natural fibres, this traditional carrying bag reflects the remarkable craftsmanship of the Lani people. More than a practical object, a man’s nokin often served as a marker of identity and social status. This fine example is adorned with pig tusks and trade beads, both highly valued possessions in the traditional economy of the Papuan highlands.
For the Lani, pigs represented wealth, prestige, and social influence. Pig tusks were treasured ornaments and frequently displayed during ceremonies and important gatherings. The colourful trade beads, obtained through regional exchange networks and early outside contact, added further value and distinction to personal possessions such as this nokin.
Collected in the field in 1963, the piece shows authentic age and use, providing a direct connection to a period when traditional life in the highlands remained largely unchanged. The combination of natural fibre weaving, pig tusk decoration, and early trade beads makes this a particularly attractive ethnographic object.
A rare and well-documented highlands artifact that would enhance any collection of Papuan tribal art, Oceanic ethnography, or museum-quality cultural objects.
Provenance: Field collected, West Papua Highlands, 1963; old Dutch colonial collection.
