Taíno Terracotta Zemi Figure – 10th to 15th Century AD
An impressive Taíno terracotta zemi figure depicting a seated supernatural being with exaggerated facial features, large circular eyes, prominent mouth, and stylized cranial ornamentation characteristic of Taíno religious art. Zemis were sacred representations of deities, ancestral spirits, and powerful supernatural entities that played a central role in Taíno cosmology, ritual practices, and social identity throughout the Caribbean. The expressive sculptural treatment, compact seated posture, and carefully modeled details reflect the symbolic rather than naturalistic approach favored by Taíno artists. The figure retains an attractive archaeological surface with visible age-related wear, mineral deposits, and patina accumulated over centuries, making it a remarkable example of pre-Columbian ceremonial sculpture.
