Zushi "Buddhist altar", sometimes spelled Butsudan, is a small type of shrine or temple commonly found in temples and homes in Japanese Buddhist cultures.

This finely crafted zushi houses a gilt-lacquered image of Senju Kannon (Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara), one of the most revered bodhisattvas in Japanese Buddhism and a symbol of boundless compassion. The reverse of the shrine bears the inscription "Dai-jūshin Kirihata-ji," identifying it with Kirihata-ji, the 10th temple of the famous Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, whose principal deity is the Thousand-Armed Kannon. The delicate openwork halo, finely detailed figure, and portable double-door shrine form reflect its devotional purpose, while age-related wear and patina add to the historical charm of this evocative pilgrimage-related object.
