Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
A finely cast small Renaissance bronze apothecary mortar of flared cylindrical form, with a broad everted rim, rounded base, and two opposing handles modelled as stylised gryphon heads. The body is decorated with vertical panels divided by raised bands.
-> Mortars of this type were used by apothecaries, physicians, and households for grinding, crushing, and preparing herbs, minerals, spices, pigments, and medicinal ingredients.
-> The gryphon, a mythical creature combining the eagle and the lion, was traditionally associated with strength, vigilance, and guardianship, making it a suitable decorative motif for a finely cast functional object.
Maximum diameter: ± 70,6 mm
Height: ± 43,4 mm
Weight: ± 274,5 g
Condition:
Good condition with attractive patina, small dents and minor casting irregularities. The decorative panels and gryphon-head handles remain clearly visible. Minor surface irregularities and signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request for all lots with a hammer price of €100 or higher.
-> Bronze mortars were important tools in Renaissance apothecary and medical practice. Their heavy construction made them suitable for repeated use with a pestle, while their decorative casting often reflected the status and professional identity of the owner.
-> Mortars of this type were cast in bronze, often by founders working in the same tradition as bell makers, and sometimes in bell foundries themselves. Their bell-metal composition and cast form give them the clear, resonant tone for which such mortars are well known, while details were refined by hand after casting.
-> Renaissance mortars were frequently ornamented with ribs, bands, inscriptions, coats of arms, animal heads, or mythological motifs. The combination of practical function and symbolic decoration makes them valued examples of early European metalwork.
