The Greek kylix is a type of drinking cup with a shallow bowl and two horizontally oriented handles, commonly used in ancient Greece during the Archaic and Classical periods (circa 6th to 4th centuries BCE). Known for its practicality and aesthetic appeal, the kylix was often employed during symposia, the social gatherings where Greek men would drink, converse, and enjoy entertainment. The shallow design of the kylix made it ideal for toasting and for drinking wine, which was typically diluted with water.

Kylixes decorated with floral patterns are notable for their elegant and intricate designs. Floral decoration on these vessels often featured motifs such as palmettes, lotus flowers, and other stylized plant forms, reflecting the Greeks' appreciation for natural beauty and their artistic skill in pottery. The floral patterns were usually executed using the black-figure or red-figure techniques. In the black-figure technique, the decoration was painted in a slip that turned black during firing, leaving the natural red clay as the background. In the red-figure technique, the figures and patterns were left in the red of the clay while the background was painted black. The choice of technique and the quality of the floral designs often indicated the skill of the potter and the social status of the owner.

Floral decorations on kylixes also carried symbolic meanings and were part of a broader trend in Greek art that celebrated the natural world. The recurring use of floral motifs on these drinking vessels showcased the artist's ability to integrate decorative patterns with functional objects, blending form and function seamlessly.
