Description
This bronze pendant represents a Cross Pattée, a form strongly associated with the heraldic insignia of medieval knightly orders such as the Knights Templar, Teutonic Order, and Knights Hospitaller. During the Late Early Medieval and Crusader periods, this cross type appeared on shields, seals, rings, and pendants as a sign of Christian devotion and martial identity.
The five circular bosses on the surface evoke the Five Wounds of Christ, a powerful motif in medieval Christian symbolism. The central mark represents the wound of Christ’s side, while the four surrounding marks correspond to the wounds of the hands and feet.
Compact bronze crosses of this form were worn as personal devotional pendants, combining expressions of faith with protective symbolism. The Cross Pattée design and its five-wound motif place this pendant within the visual language of crusader-era Christian devotion.
