賣家描述
Baule Wisdom Figure, Bouaké Region, Ivory Coast, wood with a dark, glossy patina; Central Ivory Coast, Bouaké Region.
This male seated figure belongs to the Baule art tradition of central Ivory Coast, a tradition highly regarded in West Africa for its exceptional synthesis of idealized beauty, spiritual significance, and masterful craftsmanship. The region around Bouaké has been a cultural center of Baule art for centuries, producing numerous sculptures that embody social authority, ancestral dignity, and wisdom.
The figure sits on a richly ornamented, anvil-shaped stool, which can be interpreted as a symbol of rank and stability. Its presence is largely defined by the elaborately designed hairstyle, whose complex structure is reminiscent of a regal helmet. The same meticulous attention to detail is evident in the finely ornamented beard and sideburns, making the head and face the visual focal point of the composition. The alert, frontal gaze lends the figure spiritual presence and authority. Between the arched eyebrows appears a three-part ornament, emphasizing the central axis of the face and possibly alluding to spiritual or social significance.
The angled arms underscore the dignified posture. While the right hand appears open with its palm facing upward - a gesture of receiving or offering - the left holds a richly patterned staff, a classic attribute of authority and experience. The knobbed, checkerboard ornament on the abdomen, as well as the decorated back, demonstrate the connection between body and ornament, typical of Baule art, as bearers of ideal beauty.
Patina, abrasion, and traces of use lend the sculpture an impressive historical depth and testify to its long-standing appreciation.
Literature (selection) Susan Mullin Vogel: Baule: African Art, Western Eyes. New Haven 1997.
Monni Adams: Akan Arts and Aesthetics. Los Angeles 1983.
Herbert M. Cole: Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa. Washington 1989.

Christopher D. Roy: Traditional Art of Africa. Upper Saddle River 1999.
