The 1954 Blandy’s Terrantez is not simply a rare wine — it is a wine made from a grape that, for decades, did not exist. The last commercial crop of Terrantez was harvested in 1988, shortly before the land was commandeered for a shopping centre on the outskirts of Funchal. Any bottle carrying a Terrantez label from 1954 represents one of the final chapters of a variety that came within a single generation of disappearing from the earth entirely.
