Asante fertility doll "Akua'ba" - Gold Coast (Ghana) and an Adja figure from Togo
Typical for the Asante fertility doll "Akua'ba" (34 cm) is the large round flat head which is regarded as a sign of beauty by the Asante. Sometimes mothers gently pressed the face of their new born babies to give it a flatter appearance. The throat has eight rings as a sign of affluence. The arms are short forming a t-shape together with the narrow tube like body. Akua'ba or "Wednesdays' child" is a fertilty doll of the Asante.
The Adja figure (23 cm) is heavily encrusted in a sacrificial substance - there are remains of red paint on the back of the figure
