A beautifully crafted Japanese antique Kodansu— a small decorative chest of drawers representing the finest tradition of Japanese tansu cabinetry. Constructed from zelkova wood (keyaki), celebrated for its striking golden-brown grain and exceptional hardness, this compact chest embodies the meticulous craftsmanship of the Meiji to Showa era.
The exterior is richly appointed with hand-forged black iron hardware (kuronuri kanagu): decorative corner protectors reinforce every edge, ornate butterfly-shaped hinges flank both sides, and the double cabinet doors are fitted with distinctive twisted-rope ring pulls (nawanawa kanagu) mounted on embossed iron backplates — a hallmark of quality Japanese tansu making.
Opening the two doors reveals a well-organized interior of six small drawers arranged in three rows of two, each fitted with individual cast iron bail handles and decorative corner fittings. The lower section features one full-width drawer whose interior is lined with warm gold-colored fabric, adding an unexpected touch of luxury and making it ideal for storing delicate items such as jewelry or silk accessories.
