Spirit panels occupy a central place in Asmat ceremonial life. They were created to honor ancestors, maintain connections between the living and the spirit world, and serve as powerful ritual objects within the men’s ceremonial house. Condition

The panel is in good antique condition overall. As often encountered with large ritual carvings of this age, a few small losses and minor missing fragments are present. Provenance

Field collected in West Papua during the 1980s and held in a private collection ever since.
