Snuff container – Turkana – Kenya – Horn and leather – Mid-20th century
Origin: Turkana people
Country: Kenya
Material: Horn and leather
Dimensions of the horn container: diameter 4 cm x height 7.5 cm
Dimensions of the leather container: 10.5 x 4.5 cm
Period: Mid-20th century
Provenance: Collected locally by the owner in the 1990s
A fine old Turkana snuff container from Kenya, made of horn and fitted with its leather carrying case.
This type of object belongs to the tradition of personal tobacco and snuff accessories used in daily life and carried on the body. The horn receptacle is compact and beautifully proportioned, with a fitted stopper and suspension system in leather. It is accompanied by an elegant leather sheath or pouch, elongated in form and carefully worked, which adds both protection and visual presence to the ensemble.
What makes this example especially appealing is the contrast between the smooth, dense horn container and the supple leather case, whose narrow elongated silhouette gives the object a particularly refined and distinctive character. The construction is practical, but also highly expressive, with the different elements combining into a coherent and sculptural whole.
The surfaces show a beautiful old usage patina, with wear and handling traces consistent with age and long use. Both functional and decorative, this is a very attractive example of East African personal equipment.
A fine ethnographic object, appreciated for its authenticity, material quality, and strong visual identity.
Condition
Wear, abrasions, and surface irregularities consistent with age and use. Good overall condition. Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The horn snuff container and its leather case only.
No stand included.
