A fine Turkana wooden vessel of the type often referred to as an elephit, combining a simple cylindrical form with a discreet but highly effective decorative treatment.

Field information (collected by me) confirms that the elephit was used primarily for milking, especially cows (“ox” in local English usage) and camels. This direct link between form and function gives the vessel an added ethnographic interest, beyond the quiet strength of its silhouette.

This example is especially appealing for the clarity of its proportions. The body rises in a tall, slightly tapered cylinder, structured by darker bands at the upper and lower edges and by a restrained pattern of small perforations framing simple geometric motifs. The decoration remains sober, but gives the vessel rhythm and presence without disturbing the purity of the form.

As with related examples, the interest lies equally in function and in surface. The wood has developed a beautiful warm blonde patina, enlivened by handling marks and age. The small old stitched repair near the rim adds to the authenticity of the piece and underlines its long life in use.

Both utilitarian and sculptural, this is a very attractive Turkana vessel, appreciated for its balanced silhouette, its quiet decorative intelligence, and its honest field character.
