Collection passed on to me by mother (P.M.Shaw) in 2009
Given to her by
J.G.Judd who acquired the piece part of a strand of varied depictions and amulets from Cairo dealer 03-02-1969. - with copy of original invoice available.
International Signed and Tracked.
Egyptian Trussed Duck amulet.
Identification and Dating
Artifact Type: Ancient Egyptian Amulet / Weight in the shape of a Bound or Trussed Goose/Duck.
Material: Egyptian Faience (glazed ceramic material featuring a distinctive turquoise/green-blue copper-based glaze, exhibiting typical surface crazing/fine cracks).
Dating: Most likely New Kingdom to Late Period (c. 1550–332 BCE).
Visual and Material Analysis
Iconography and Form
The artifact depicts a waterfowl, specifically a goose or duck, prepared as a food offering.
The Trussed Position: As clearly visible in image DSC_0252_2.JPG, the bird's legs are pulled forward and tied flat against its breast. The wings are folded tightly back against its body.
The Neck and Head: The long neck is elegantly curved backward so that its head rests flat along the top spine of its own body, facing the tail end. This highly stylized, compact posture is typical of Egyptian artistic conventions for depicting sacrificial animals.
Microscopic images have been added to display pigmentation and integrity of the core faience.
