賣家描述
This sugarcane figurine from Papua New Guinea represents a form of ritual sculpture closely linked to ancestor worship, initiation practices, and the visualization of spiritual presence. Such figures were often crafted from perishable materials and served as temporary vessels of supernatural power within ceremonial contexts. Their simplified form suggests less a naturalistic representation than the distillation of spiritual essence.
The rod-like figure is crowned by a comparatively small head, the appearance of which is dominated by large, circular eyes. The dashed outlines and knobby pupils lend the gaze an intense, almost supernatural presence. Above the eyes rise arched brows, rhythmically structuring the face. The triangular nose with its narrow bridge forms the vertical axis of the composition, while the lateral, stamp-like protrusions frame the lower part of the face.
The delicate ornamentation of the shaft deserves special attention. The upper incised patterns resemble a second, abstracted face and allude to the multi-layered spiritual identities frequently found in Melanesia. Further linear incisions articulate the staff down to the stamp-like base. The glossy patina testifies to prolonged use and points to the object's cultic significance.
