Details
Origin: Ethiopia
People: Gurage attribution
Material: Wood
Dimensions: approx. 53 x 13 x 11 cm
Period: mid-20th century
Provenance: Collected locally by the present owner
Description
An unusual Ethiopian wooden chopping block, attributed to the Gurage.
The object has a long rectangular body resting on six short cylindrical feet. One end is pierced and fitted with a cord handle, giving the piece an almost zoomorphic presence, somewhere between a functional object and a small vernacular creature.
The upper surface shows the characteristic cuts and knife marks of a chopping activity. These traces are an essential part of the object’s identity and confirm its long practical use.
Both long sides are decorated with incised hatched triangles, a simple but effective ornament that gives rhythm to the otherwise compact and utilitarian form. The decoration remains sober, in keeping with the direct and functional nature of the piece.
This is a rare and appealing Ethiopian utilitarian object, appreciated for its unusual construction, six-legged form, incised decoration and strong vernacular character.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, marks, abrasions, cracks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
Stabilized crack. One foot with a loss. The structure is sound.
Knife marks and cutting traces to the upper surface.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The object only.
No stand included.
