Description
A fine Ethiopian *masenqo* — also spelled *masinqo* — preserved with its bow.
The *masenqo* is one of Ethiopia’s most characteristic bowed instruments. It is a single-string spike fiddle, traditionally played vertically, and used in both solo and ensemble contexts.
This example follows the classic construction, with a long wooden neck rising from a skin-covered resonator. The resonator has a strong diamond-shaped form, giving the instrument a very graphic silhouette. The bow is also preserved, which is an important point for the integrity of the object.
What makes this example especially appealing is its complete state of preservation. Horsehair is still present on both the instrument and the bow, a fragile detail rarely preserved so well on objects of this type.
The surface shows a deep old patina, with dark tones and reddish highlights on the wood. The combination of the angular resonator, long neck, cords, horsehair and curved bow gives the object a strong sculptural presence beyond its musical function.
A very attractive Ethiopian musical instrument, appreciated for its complete state, old patina, surviving horsehair elements and strong visual character.
Condition
Good condition overall, with wear, abrasions, small marks and surface irregularities consistent with age and use.
Complete with bow. Horsehair still present on both instrument and bow.
Very limited damage for an object of this type.
Beautiful old usage patina.
Please refer to the photographs.
Included
The instrument and its bow.
No stand included.
