賣家描述
Korwar-Head “Sego” Hammer – Field Collected 1950s – Ex-Doctor Provenance – Yapen Island, Geelvink Bay, West Papua
A rare and culturally significant ethnographic implement from Yapen Island, located in the Geelvink Bay (Cenderawasih Bay) region of northern West Papua. This sego hammer combines utilitarian function with ancestral symbolism characteristic of coastal Papuan carving traditions.
Carved from dense hardwood and shaped through sustained use, the object shows a deep, even patina with softened edges and clear handling wear. It is an authentic working tool rather than a ceremonial reproduction, retaining the tactile evidence of daily life in its original context.
The most striking feature is the Korwar head carved into the handle. This ancestral face—highly characteristic of northern West Papuan island art—embodies protective and spiritual associations tied to lineage and the presence of ancestors. Integrated directly into the grip of a functional hammer, the carving transforms an everyday tool into an object that bridges practical work and spiritual protection.
The provenance strengthens its historical value. The piece was field collected in the 1950s by a medical doctor stationed in remote island communities around Yapen Island. Objects collected in this period often represent an early and relatively unmediated record of indigenous material culture before later shifts in production and external influence.
A compelling survivor of mid-20th-century field collecting: honest in wear, strong in form, and rich in layered meaning.
Provenance: Ex-medical doctor van Amelsvoort collection, field collected and 1950s, Yapen Island, Geelvink Bay region, West Papua.
