This elegant pear-shaped vase is covered in a deep, lustrous black glaze that creates a striking visual backdrop for the intricate gold-painted leaf motifs that adorn both the front and back of the body.

Beneath each leaf, a warm amber-brown undercoat has been carefully applied, adding depth, shadow, and a sense of three-dimensionality to every vein and contour. As light moves across the surface, the interplay of black, gold, and brown shifts dramatically, offering a different view from every angle.

The interior of the mouth rim is glazed in a warm reddish-brown, providing a refined contrast to the darkened exterior. The unglazed foot ring reveals a fine, brilliant-white porcelain body — a hallmark of premium Arita ware, where the quality of the clay itself is part of the artistic statement.

With its substantial weight and commanding presence, this vase makes a powerful display piece whether placed in a tokonoma alcove, on a shelf, or as a centerpiece in any interior.

Fujii Shumei devoted his career to developing a signature technique of applying leaf imagery through underglaze painting and gold overglaze, capturing the changing seasons of Arita in porcelain. His work was acquired by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on six occasions — a mark of recognition typically reserved for works considered representative of Japanese artistic culture abroad.

Artist Profile
藤井朱明 Fujii Shumei (1936–2017)
Born in Arita, Saga Prefecture, the birthplace of Japanese porcelain. From the age of fifteen, Fujii worked at local akae-ya (overglaze enamel workshops) and ceramic manufacturers, building a deep technical foundation in Arita ware. In 1962 his work "Kanryu" was accepted into the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition), and he went on to be selected a total of fifteen times. He established his own workshop in 1963 and opened Shumei Kiln in 1974.
Fujii developed a highly personal technique of depicting leaf forms through a combination of underglaze painting and gold overglaze, using the imagery of the natural world around Arita to evoke the four seasons. His works were acquired by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on six occasions — a recognition typically awarded to pieces considered representative of Japanese culture overseas. He received numerous prizes, including awards at the Japan Ceramic Exhibition, the Minister of Education Award at the Kyushu-Yamaguchi Ceramics Exhibition, and the Japan New Craft Award at the Japan New Craft Exhibition. He was a member (kai-yu) of the Nitten and of the Saga Fine Arts Association.
