Item Description
萩焼 Hagi wear 花入 vase by 守繁徹 Morishige Tohru (1954-)

A tall, slender Hagi ware flower vase by Morishige Tohru, kiln name Renkozan, evoking the quiet dignity of classical Japanese ceramics. The form rises from a round foot to a distinctively triangular mouth, a subtle sculptural choice that gives the piece an asymmetrical tension and an air of restrained poetry. Across the surface, the raw warmth of Hagi clay is layered with pale feldspathic glaze, through which earthy amber tones and faint traces of brushwork emerge — a composition that mirrors the weathered stillness of an autumn landscape. A delicate plant motif, incised or impressed near the base, adds a note of naturalistic grace without disturbing the vase's meditative presence.

Hagi ware is renowned for its porous, soft-fired body, celebrated in the tea world under the adage "first Raku, second Hagi, third Karatsu." Its distinctive quality of nana-bake — the gradual transformation of glaze color and texture through use — means this vase will deepen in character over time, becoming uniquely yours. The potter's seal is impressed at the base.

This work comes with its original signed wooden storage box (tomobako) bearing the artist's calligraphic title and signature, a protective cloth (tomogumo), and a biographical pamphlet of the artist. These accompaniments confirm authenticity and add significant value for the discerning collector.

Artist Profile

守繁徹 Morishige Tohru (1954-)
Born in 1954 in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Morishige Tohru is the second-generation master of the Renkozan kiln, heir to a lineage rooted in the ancient Hagi ware tradition. He studied ceramics under his father, Morishige Eitoru, whose kiln was established on a historic site associated with the 17th-century kiln of Yamazaki Heidzaemon, a disciple of Lee Jakwang, one of the Korean potters who shaped Hagi ware's founding heritage.
Morishige became a member of the Japan Ceramic Society in 1983 and of the Hagi Ceramic Artists Association in 1993. His career spans over four decades of continuous exhibition, including multiple prizes at the Daisanmyomei-ten and the Zentoen national ceramics exhibition. In 2004 he received the Hagi Ceramic Artists Association Prize. He has been invited to exhibit in Korea on numerous occasions — at the Korea-Japan Chawan Exhibition (2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011) — reflecting recognition of his mastery of Hagi's deep Korean craft heritage. He held solo exhibitions at Ikebukuro Mitsukoshi, Tokyo (1995) and Tobu Department Store, Tokyo (2011), and in 2021 presented his "Ryokuju" series at Sakae Mitsukoshi, Nagoya.
His work is grounded in the philosophy of "yo to bi" — the unity of function and beauty — and is particularly celebrated for its expression of Hagi clay's characteristic transformation over time, known as "Hagi nana-bake," the seven-fold change of Hagi ware.
