Authentic Antique Japanese Two-Section Stackable Clothing Tansu Chest - Rustic Wooden Wardrobe with Sliding Door & Beautifully Weathered Patina - Meiji / Taisho Period
【Description】
A wonderfully atmospheric and beautifully weathered Japanese Kasane-Tansu (stackable clothing chest) dating from the late Meiji to the Taisho period. This piece represents the quintessential rustic elegance of traditional provincial Japanese furniture, boasting a dark, rich umber tone developed naturally over a century of domestic use.
The chest features a unique and balanced asymmetric layout: the top-left section houses a smooth horizontal sliding door storage cabinet alongside nested mid-sized drawers, while the remaining expanse is dedicated to five large, deep drawers with classic iron warabite (bracken-fern style) drop handles. Structurally, it is designed in two primary stacking sections resting on a separate base frame molding, allowing for versatile placement—either stacked vertically to save space or arranged side-by-side as low rustic sideboards.
With its raw, unpretentious textures and powerful historical presence, this Tansu is an exceptional statement piece for rustic modern, loft, or Wabi-Sabi themed interiors.
【Material】
Japanese Paulownia (Kiri) wood, patinated forged iron hardware.
【Technique】
Traditional Japanese regional joinery, aged dark stain finish.
【Condition】
Fair to Good antique condition with a magnificent historical character. The wood surface shows prominent signs of age, including natural oxidation, drying cracks, scuffs, and organic wear. The backboards show traditional historic household maintenance, including old fabric/paper tape reinforcement across the wood-shrinkage seams (visible in close-up photos). The upper horizontal sliding door functions correctly and opens smoothly without a key (no key included). Structurally functional, all drawers slide as intended for an authentic period piece.
【Hardware & Structural Note】
Please note that one of the iron interlocking/connecting brackets at the lower junction/base section is damaged and partially missing (clearly documented in the final close-up photograph). Despite this antique hardware deficiency, the tiers still stack together statically and function reliably for normal display use. The upper horizontal sliding door functions correctly and opens smoothly without a key (no key included). All drawers slide as intended for an authentic period piece.
