日本古董木质根付 — 獅子(Shishi)仰望天空 — 嵌眼 — 明治时代
描述
A finely carved Japanese wood netsuke depicting a Shishi (獅子), the mythical lion of East Asian tradition, captured in a rare and dynamic upward-gazing pose — a composition of exceptional energy and spiritual presence.
Figure
The Shishi is rendered with its head tilted boldly skyward, as if responding to a celestial call — a posture that conveys both raw power and mythic alertness. The entire body is enveloped in elaborately carved scales and densely swirling mane, each element individually rendered with remarkable precision. The interplay between the smooth muscular form and the textured surface creates a striking visual contrast that rewards close examination. Inlaid eyes add a vivid sense of life to the expression.
Symbolism
The Shishi holds deep significance in Japanese and broader East Asian culture — a guardian figure placed at the gates of shrines and temples to ward off evil spirits and protect sacred spaces. Its upward gaze here suggests transcendence, vigilance, and connection to the divine realm.
Base
Two himotoshi (cord holes) on the underside, properly sized and positioned for use as a functioning netsuke. The underside shows natural wear consistent with genuine use and age.
Patina
The wood displays a rich warm amber tone with deep patina developed through decades of handling — the hallmark of a well-loved and genuinely antique piece.
Dimensions
Height: 58mm / Width: 25mm / Depth: 30mm
Condition
Very good antique condition. Rich amber patina throughout, consistent with age and handling. No chips or repairs noted.
Origin: Japan
Period: Meiji Period (1868–1912)
Material: Wood
Acquired from a private collection in Kyoto, Japan. Ships from Kyoto via EMS (Japan Post) or FedEx.
Japan Rare Archive, Kyoto
