VIKING BROOCH (800–1100 A.D.)

Type of artifact:

A fibula (commonly called a brooch) from the Viking Age, dated to around 800–1100 A.D., which was a key element of clothing used for fastening thick cloaks, capes, or robes on the shoulder.

Origin:

Authentic Scandinavian craftsmanship of the Early Middle Ages, characterized by a minimalism of functional form native to Nordic culture and outstanding durability of construction.Material: Ancient copper alloy (bronze).

Patina and colors:

The object is distinguished by a unique, layered mineral coating with an intense, two-tone coloration. The surface of the metal is covered with thick and vivid patches of light blue (azure) malachite-azurite patina, which smoothly transitions into shades of deep emerald green, with minor accents of earthy brown, confirming the natural, centuries-old process of bronze oxidation in the ground.

Characteristics of the frame and pin:

The construction is based on an open, regular hoop (ring) with a slightly flattened cross-section. The fastening pin has a wide, flattened head wrapped around the frame, moving further into a tapering, sharply pointed shaft that pierces the fabric.

Features of the ends (terminals):

A special feature of this piece is the exceptionally long, straight, parallelly descending arms of the hoop. These elongated ends stabilized the brooch on the folds of woolen fabric, protecting it from shifting and unfastening the robe.

Condition:

Complete, integral artifact with no structural losses. The fastening pin has retained its freedom of movement on the hoop, allowing it to be tilted and fully displaying the construction of the fibula.
